29 Inches High x 19 Inches Wide x 11 Inches Deep
This bust is from the statue of the Diana of Versailles, also known as Artemis with a Doe, that stands at about 80 inches tall. Diana is in motion, walking forward and looking off to the right while she takes an arrow from the quiver on her back. Her left hand rests on the antlers of a deer jumping beside her. She wears the common chiton for ease of movement, and a diadem rests on her head.
The sculpture is an Imperial Roman marble copy of a Greek bronze original made in the 4th century B.C.E. It is a masterpiece of ancient sculpture, although parts of it, including Diana’s arms and the deer's head and legs, were restored or recreated in 1602 by Barthélemy Prieur and in 1808 by Lange.
